India Freight and Logistics Market Analysis by Mordor Intelligence

The India freight and logistics market size is expected to increase from USD 315.9 billion in 2026 to USD 343 billion in 2027 and reach USD 523.3 billion by 2032, growing at a CAGR of 8.82% over 2027-2032.

Tightly timed retail fulfillment and temperature-controlled healthcare handling in India expand demand for coordinated logistics services. Integrated networks and shared movement data give providers ways to connect collection, storage and transport within those service commitments. The Middle East conflict that began on February 28, 2026, raised rerouting and war-risk costs for Indian export cargo moving through the region. Driver shortages constrain available capacity, while fuel’s large share of transporter operating expenses exposes small and mid-sized fleets to cash-flow pressure when diesel prices rise without adequate freight-rate pass-through. Small-fleet providers with limited bargaining power may therefore absorb input-cost increases while meeting the timed service commitments of retail and healthcare buyers.

India Freight and Logistics Market Segment Analysis

By End-User Industry:

Retail Networks Create Replenishment Work

Wholesale and retail trade accounted for a 33.71% share of the India freight and logistics market size in 2026 and is forecast to be the fastest-growing segment, with a 9.45% CAGR over 2027-2032. The largest segment’s retail reach is illustrated by Amazon Now, which served more than 120 Indian cities through close to 800 micro-fulfillment and urban fulfillment centers in October 2026. Its retail service offered daily essentials including groceries, personal care products and small appliances. The combination of many local centers and several product categories creates a geographically distributed receiving task. Contracted logistics providers can address that task through replenishment services alongside individual-order fulfillment.

Retail shopping peaks create a different capacity decision from maintaining a distributed fulfillment footprint. During the opening period of Amazon’s 2026 Great Indian Festival, customers ordered over 100% more products year over year. Providers serving such peaks can reserve temporary handling capacity around the event rather than treating the short burst as a permanent operating requirement. Agriculture, fishing, and forestry includes foodgrain distribution, with the Food Corporation of India moving approximately 28.33 million metric tons in 2025 for National Food Security Act and other schemes. This grain movement requires bulk dispatch capacity, while the retail peak calls for handling capacity that can be withdrawn after the event.

By Logistics Function:

Freight Scale Meets Parcel Expansion

Freight transport represented a 62.75% India freight and logistics market share in 2026. The largest segment spans road, rail, air, pipelines, sea and inland waterways, giving it several forms of physical carrying capacity. Indian Railways carried 1.67 billion metric tons of freight in India during FY2025-26. Road dominated India’s domestic freight movement in FY2025 at 71%, ahead of second-ranked railways at 18%, according to Yatayat Corporation India Limited’s filing citing CareEdge.

Courier, express and parcel (CEP) is the fastest-growing segment, with a forecast CAGR of 10.17% over 2027-2032. Delhivery, Ltd. reported 322 million express parcel shipments in India in April-June 2026, its Q1 FY27, up 55% year over year.[2] Delhivery’s Express Parcel service EBITDA margin was 15.6% in that quarter, excluding Ecom Express integration costs and revenue from transitioning Ecom Express businesses, Delhivery Local, Rapid and Financial services. That is 3.2 percentage points below the 18.8% reported for Q4 FY26 on the same basis, so the margin fell sequentially while shipments rose year over year.

Geography Analysis

Western and southern states present different combinations of maritime gateways and inland connections for freight providers. The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade’s Logistics Ease Across Different States (LEADS) 2025 assessment classified Tamil Nadu as a coastal-state Exemplar, describing advanced infrastructure, efficient multimodal connectivity and preparedness in logistics innovation. Maharashtra’s perception scores for improvement in airport and rail infrastructure were above national and coastal averages in the same assessment. In Gujarat, Deendayal Port Authority at Kandla handled 160.11 million metric tons of cargo in FY2025-26. This combination gives an integrated supplier distinct assignments in port-cargo handling and the rail or air connections serving industrial and hinterland locations.

Karnataka’s port cargo and Haryana’s new rail yard show activity changing in different parts of the freight chain. Karnataka’s major and non-major ports handled 22.88 million metric tons of cargo in April-September 2025-26, up from 21.34 million a year earlier, on provisional data. In August 2026, Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini flagged off the first freight train from the new rail yard at the Integrated Multi-Modal Logistics Hub in Nangal Chaudhary, Mahendragarh district. An operator would assemble a transport service differently around Karnataka’s port-linked cargo than around Haryana’s rail-origin facility.

Uttar Pradesh and Punjab distinguish inland corridor access from the cargo-origin function of foodgrain dispatch. LEADS 2025 classified Uttar Pradesh as a landlocked-state Exemplar, citing logistics initiatives including dedicated freight corridors. In 2025, Indian Railways dispatched approximately 1,384 metric tons of foodgrains from Ajit Wal Railway Station in Punjab to Anantnag. The train marked the first bulk rail-based foodgrain supply to Anantnag Railway Station. For a freight provider, the Punjab departure demonstrates a commodity-specific extension of rail supply, while Uttar Pradesh’s corridor profile points toward a broader transport and handling offer.

Regulatory Framework and Outlook

Selected jurisdictions are compared from the perspective of an integrated freight service provider coordinating transport and warehouse operations. The national framework assigns documentation duties for qualifying consignments to registered persons and, in specified handover cases, transporters. Tamil Nadu’s policy adds a state coordination framework through Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation Limited (TIDCO). The two regimes therefore differ in kind, with one governing documentation on each covered shipment and the other a standing channel for coordinating logistics initiatives.

Regulatory Table of India Freight and Logistics Market

Regulatory Table of India Freight and Logistics Market
Decision factor India Tamil Nadu
Primary authority Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation Limited
Key instruments or direction Central GST e-way bill rules for registered persons causing movements above the prescribed consignment-value threshold Logistics Policy 2023, effective for 5 years from promulgation unless revised or amended earlier
Commercial effect Registered persons furnish pre-movement information and transporter details; transporters generate the bill in the specified handover case when it was not already generated Coordination and tracking of logistics initiatives and incentives
Current policy attractiveness Medium High
Future direction of policy attractiveness No change No change
Source: Mordor Intelligence

India’s Medium rating and No change direction reflect pre-movement documentation duties and the continuing allocation of responsibilities between registered persons and transporters. Tamil Nadu receives a High rating for TIDCO’s dedicated coordination role under its logistics framework. The policy and its proposed fiscal incentives have 5-year terms from promulgation, subject to earlier policy revision or amendment, with incentive extensions considered on effectiveness and emerging requirements. Its No change direction reflects the separate Integrated Logistics Plan’s 10-year horizon from notification and envisaged rolling updates, providing freight operators a longer planning framework.

Value Chain Stages

The value chain compares shipment coordination, origin storage and trunk transport as distinct sources of logistics service income. In June 2025, Adani Ports and SEZ operated its first double-stacked rake from ICD Tumb to ICD Patli, strengthening connectivity between JNPT and the Delhi NCR hinterland. Delhivery moved approximately 2 million metric tons of part-truckload freight in FY26, up 17% year over year. Both examples concern trunk movement, where the rail-road interface affects whether carrying capacity can support a complete, billable freight service.

Mahindra Logistics, Ltd. managed 20.4 million square feet of warehousing space in FY26. Its freight-forwarding revenue grew 14% year over year in the same financial year. The combination illustrates how storage operations and shipment coordination can provide different service-income streams within one logistics business. Forwarding fees can be earned independently of supplying warehouse space for the same shipment, allowing a combined provider to capture value through either activity.

Competitive Landscape

Competition combines fragmented truck ownership with organized express networks and integrated multimodal businesses. Major competitors include DHL Group, Delhivery, Ltd., Blue Dart Express, Ltd., Allcargo Logistics, Ltd. (Including Gati Express), and TCI (Transport Corporation of India Ltd.). Blue Dart provides express-air and integrated transportation and distribution services as part of DHL Group’s DHL eCommerce division. Delhivery completed its Ecom Express acquisition on July 18, 2025, and subsequently reported retaining 7 facilities totaling 1.3 million square feet after network rationalization.

For shippers needing distribution and ongoing logistics support, common company ownership offers a potential route to a coordinated contract. On November 1, 2025, Allcargo Logistics, Ltd. became the resulting company for domestic express distribution formerly under Allcargo Gati and for the domestic contract-logistics business. Allcargo Gati launched 24-hour Air Express delivery to 8 cities on June 10, 2025, backed by connectivity to 34 commercial airports. The subsequent merger brought that express business together with domestic contract logistics, giving shippers a potential way to coordinate time-definite dispatch with contracted logistics handling through the same supplier.

Multimodal execution gives integrated operators another basis for competition because the offer includes managing connections between transport and storage. TCI integrates road, rail, sea and warehousing solutions, with operating divisions including TCI Freight, TCI Supply Chain Solutions and TCI Seaways. It reported higher revenue from operations for its consolidated company group in FY2025-26 than in FY2024-25. Blue Dart reported year-over-year revenue growth in FY2025-26, supported by e-commerce and B2B surface express solutions. For a shipper consolidating freight, Blue Dart’s express focus and TCI’s combination of transport modes and warehousing offer a choice between express specialization and multimodal integration.
