North America Small Arms Market Analysis

North America Small Arms Market is projected to register a CAGR of 3.2% during the forecast period.

The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the small arms market has been low. Although a few manufacturers faced supply chain issues and slight delays in contracts, there was no considerable drop in small arms revenues for market players during 2020 and 2021.

As per data, the demand for ammunition from military users is higher due to higher usage as well as minimum carry count of ammunition per soldier is over 120 rounds or 4 magazines for assault rifles, while for law enforcement personnel, this count barely reaches 60 rounds per person for their handguns and rifles.

Popular and capable assault rifles can fire either 5.56- or 7.62-mm ammunition, and most of the countries in the study scope have a high preference for Russian Ak-47 rifles. On the other hand, 12.7 mm or .50 caliber have higher demand in military roles while 9 mm and .45 see a higher usage in private and law enforcement users.

North American countries has been replacing their aging ammunition with fresh stock, which has a better lifespan as well as improved storage and handling safety compared to the same ammunition manufactured a decade ago. This is the key driving factor for the market during the forecast period.

North America Small Arms Market Trends

This section covers the major market trends shaping the North America Small Arms Market according to our research experts:

Military Segment Expected to Continue its Dominance During the Forecast Period

North American countries (i.e. the USA and Canada) accounted for 94 percent of total regional spending, followed by South America (5.1 percent) and Central America and the Caribbean (1.2 percent). In 2021, the United States spent around 800.67 billion U.S. dollars on its military. In 2021, Canada's budget for the defense was approximately 26.5 billion U.S. dollars, which is an increase of around three billion U.S. dollars in comparison to 2020.

With the increase in military engagements, armed forces are upgrading to more powerful small arms to deal with combat requirements. Additionally, with the armor being worn by the militaries becoming tougher to penetrate, armies are focusing on firearms that cause cyclical impacts, causing more damage to enemies. Countries are now focusing on procuring a wide variety of latest-generation small arms for their militaries. For instance, In April 2022, The Army recently awarded a contract to manufacturer SIG Sauer for two new soldier weapons: the XM5 rifle and the XM250 automatic rifle. For soldiers involved in close-quarters combat, the XM5 will eventually replace the M4/M4A1 carbine rifle, while the XM250 will replace the M249 Squad Automatic Weapon.

Such procurements are expected to drive the segment’s growth during the forecast period.

North America Small Arms Market - United States Defense Expenditure, In USD Billion, 2018-2021

The United States to Exhibit the Highest Growth Rate During the Forecast Period

As of 4 April 2022 the FY2023 presidential budget request of USD 773 billion included USD 177.5 billion for the Army, USD194 billion for the Air Force and Space Force, and USD 230.8 billion for the Navy and Marine Corps (up 4.1% from the FY2022 request).

The high defense spending of the country is enabling it to spend more on procuring new-generation small arms. Also, the adoption of next-generation weaponry by political rivals such as Russia and China has encouraged the United States to adopt a similar approach and invest significantly toward enhancing the capabilities of its armed forces. In addition to active combat, the US personnel are typically deployed as part of several peacekeeping missions, and military attachés, or are part of the embassy, consulate security, and several other classified missions. Such deployments have significantly contributed toward the growth of the procurement of small arms by the US armed forces. The US forces use several infantry weapons designed to suppress enemy positions, free up movement for friendly troops, assault far-away targets, and neutralize fortified structures and vehicles. The United States is now focused on procuring the next-generation squad weapon for its infantry. After nearly five years of development, the Army is expected to finalize the design for its Next Generation Squad Weapon to replace the M4 carbine and M249 machine guns currently in the hands of ground combat soldiers by mid-2022. The two weapons that come out of the Next Generation Squad Weapon program will be fielded to soldiers in frontline military occupational specialties, including infantry, cavalry scouts, combat medics, forward observers, combat engineers, and special operations forces. On the other hand, the civilian gun userbase in the United States is also significantly high, which has helped the country become home to a robust small arms industry over the years. Thus, the demand from both the civilian and military sectors is expected to continue to have a positive influence on the market in the region during the forecast period.
