Key Market Trends

Largest Segment By End User : Animal Feed

  • Animal feed remained the largest end-user segment in 2020 owing to application of soy and wheat protein in animal feeds.
  • The segment mainly benefitted from the constant development strategies adopted by key players. Companies, such as CHS Inc. and Agro Solvent Products, are increasingly boosting their feed-grade plant protein offerings with improved texture and nutrition profiles, thus increasing the ingredients' application scope.
  • The segment was closely followed by the F&B segment in 2020. It witnessed a huge surge in demand in 2020 due to the performance of dairy and meat alternatives. As a result of the nationwide lockdown, many consumers hoarded packaged goods, leading to rising production. The imitation meat company, Impossible Foods, reported a six-fold increase in production at its Oakland-based facility to meet the growing demand.

Competitive Landscape

The Canada Plant Protein Market is moderately consolidated, with the top five companies occupying 42.23%. The major players in this market are Archer Daniels Midland Company, CHS Inc., DuPont de Nemours Inc., Kerry Group PLC and Roquette Frères (sorted alphabetically).

Recent Developments

  • June 2021: Axiom Foods launched a new pea protein, made from Pisum sativum yellow peas, that is majorly used as a meat replacement and a meat extender. It reduces the cost of nuggets, patties, and meatballs while adding nutritional content, protein, and juiciness.
  • February 2021: Merit Functional Foods announced to open its 94,000 square-foot plant-based protein facility in Winnipeg, Manitoba. This production facility may optimize its pea and canola proteins for use in food and beverage applications. The plant has the flexibility to run both pea and/or canola, with initial requirements of 25,000 ton of raw materials. With the potential for future plant expansion, Merit’s raw material requirement could rise to more than 100,000 ton per year.
  • February 2021: DuPont's Nutrition & Biosciences and the ingredient company IFF announced their merger in 2021. The combined company will continue to operate under the name IFF. The complementary portfolios give the company leadership positions within a range of ingredients, including soy protein.
