Key Market Trends

Largest Segment By End User : Food and Beverages

  • In terms of value, the food and beverage segment was the leading segment, which is expected to register a CAGR of 3.25% by value in the forecast period. Meat/meat alternatives remained the most dominant sub-segment in the food and beverage segment, which possess a volume share (40.28%) of heavily integrating plant proteins mainly sourced from soy.
  • The inclusion of sustainable alternative proteins, such as insect protein, further increases the market scope in animal feed. Companies, such as Enterra Corporation and Darling Ingredients, are boosting their production capabilities to offer a cost-effective and efficient source of feed-grade proteins. As a result, with a volume CAGR of 2.41%, the ingredient remained one of the fastest-growing protein types in animal feed among animal proteins.
  • The supplement sector was majorly driven by the application in the sports nutrition segment, which had a share of 91%, by value, in 2020. This was attributed to the growth in the number of health clubs in the United States, which reached around 41,370 in 2020.

Largest Country : United States

  • The United States led the market in 2020 due to high production consolidation in the country and an active competitive landscape. Companies are strengthening their presence in the country by acquiring small firms, ramping up protein production units, and expanding their product portfolios. Companies such as Agropur, Anchor Ingredients, and Hilmar Cheese were witnessed boosting their production capabilities over the review period. Thus, constant product developments and differentiation in the market further resulted in additional sales by volume.
  • In terms of growth, Mexico is expected to be the fastest-growing region, with a projected volume CAGR of 6.17% during the forecast period. The Mexican market is highly dominated by the demand for plant proteins in the country, which is anticipated to register a CAGR of 5.79%, by value, during the forecast period.
