SLI Batteries Application to Dominate the Market

  • Starting, lighting, and ignition (SLI) batteries have been in almost every car for the past 100 years. Generally, SLI batteries are used for short power bursts, such as starting a car engine or running light electrical loads. Moreover, these batteries supply extra power when the vehicle’s electrical load exceeds the supply from the charging system (alternator) and act as a voltage stabilizer in the electrical system that evens out voltage spikes, thereby preventing them from damaging other components in the electrical system.
  • SLI batteries are designed for automobiles and therefore are always installed with the vehicle’s charging system, which means a continuous cycle of charge and discharge in the battery whenever the vehicle is in use. The 12-volt batteries have been the most used batteries for more than 50 years. However, its normal voltage (while in use in the car and charged by the alternator) is close to 14-volt.

  • After selling 25,000 units of the lithium-ion battery Komaki XGT-X1 for INR 60,000, Komaki Electric Vehicles, in September 2021, introduced an affordable version of the electric scooter, with a lead-acid battery variant, for INR 45,000 (both prices ex-showroom, India). The company revealed the XGT-X1 electric scooter in June 2020. The electric scooter has telescopic shockers, an anti-theft lock system, remote lock, and the company’s new advanced technology, known as lithium titanate battery. This battery generally offers a range of 100 km – 120 km per charge in Eco mode. Furthermore, to ensure a safe ride on the roughest of urban roads (in emergency cases), the scooter is geared up with a synchronized braking system and sized-up BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) wheels.
  • India’s second-biggest lead-acid battery maker Amara Raja Batteries, in May 2021, restarted the business of manufacturing of lead-acid batteries. The company, in April 2021, received closure orders from the Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board (APPCB). The closure order was for allegedly violating the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974, and Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1981. However, the company resumed its manufacturing operations at its Nunegundlapalli and Karkambadi plants after the High Court of Andhra Pradesh granted permission and an interim suspension of the orders given by APPCB.
