Africa Lime Market Analysis by Mordor Intelligence
The Africa Lime Market size is estimated at USD 1.16 million in 2025, and is expected to reach USD 1.31 million by 2030, at a CAGR of 2.5% during the forecast period (2025-2030).
Africa is a significant producer of lemons and limes, with cultivation spanning 137,341 hectares and production of 2.07 million tons in 2023 as per FAOSTAT. The African lime market has grown substantially, driven by domestic consumption and export demand. South Africa, Egypt, and Tunisia are the main lemon-producing countries in the region. The primary varieties cultivated include Eureka, Lisbon, Genoa, Limoneira, Fino, and Lime.
The lime plantation area in Africa has experienced over 100% growth in the past seven years, primarily due to increased global demand and higher international prices. Currently, more than 40% of lime orchards are under five years old, indicating a significant increase in production volume expected within the next five years. While peak harvesting occurs from January to May, African producers maintain year-round cultivation capabilities. In South Africa and other regional countries, Bearss and Tahiti varieties dominate lime cultivation.
Limes contain flavonoids with antioxidant and anti-cancer properties. In Africa, lime juice has traditionally served as a preventive and treatment measure for cholera. The fruit finds widespread use in culinary applications and as a garnish for beverages. The African lime market's growth is supported by multiple factors, including extensive new plantations, diverse application potential, enhanced agricultural water management practices, and duty-free export opportunities. These elements contribute to increased production and export volumes, which are expected to drive market expansion during the forecast period.
Africa Lime Market Trends and Insights
Increasing Application of Lime in Multiple Sectors
The increasing application of lime fruits across various sectors in Africa reflects their diverse benefits. From agriculture to health, food, and export, limes have become a significant commodity with economic and cultural value. This trend continues as domestic and international demand for lime-based products increases, creating opportunities for African farmers, entrepreneurs, and industries. The fruits find applications in medicines, cosmetics, cleaning products, and food ingredients. In the beverage industry, they are essential components in lemonade, smoothies, and liquors.
Lemon juice serves as a degreaser and disinfectant in the cleaning industry. As lime usage expands across sectors, production has increased in regional countries. According to FAOSTAT, Sudan's lime production grew from 375,988.8 metric tons in 2022 to 396,777.9 metric tons in 2023. The expansion in cultivation area and supportive government policies, including subsidies, have encouraged local lime growers to increase their output.
South Africa maintains a prominent position in regional lime production. The Eastern Cape province leads in lemon/lime cultivation, representing 42% of the total planted area, followed by Limpopo (31%) and Western Cape (14%) provinces. Eureka is the dominant lemon cultivar, accounting for 75% of the total area, while Lisbon (8%) and 2PH Seedless (6%) cultivars follow. The area dedicated to lemon/lime cultivation in South Africa has doubled in the past seven years in response to consumer demand.
South Africa Dominates the Export Market
South Africa maintains self-sufficiency in lime production and holds a significant position as a major exporter. In 2023, the country's lime exports reached 0.62 million metric tons, compared to its production of 0.86 million metric tons. According to ITC Trade Map data, South Africa's lime exports increased from USD 357.2 million in 2022 to USD 362.0 million in 2023.
South African lime exports to China experienced substantial growth, increasing by over 1000 percent to reach 9,652 metric tons in 2023 following the relaxation of cold treatment requirements in August 2023. Previously, these requirements had limited exports to China by making the fruit vulnerable to chilling injury and decay. The revised protocol will boost South Africa's lime exports to China.
According to the International Trade Center (ITC), the Netherlands remains South Africa's primary export destination with imports valued at USD 84.5 million in 2023. The United Arab Emirates and the United Kingdom follow with import values of USD 35.1 million and USD 30.2 million, respectively. The steady increase in exports to these markets reflects higher production volumes and growing international demand for South African lime, indicating market growth within the country.
