Important tropical crops are fruits such as bananas, pineapples, mangos and cacao. Vanilla is still also grown, which is native to Mexico. As of the early 21st century, the rural workforce is still significant but it is shrinking. Traditional farming methods with small plots worked by families and small communities still dominate in many regions especially those with large indigenous populations such as the Southern Plateau. The growing of crops is the most important aspect of Mexicos agriculture, accounting for fifty percent of agricultural output. Main Fruits and Vegetables include corn, sugarcane, sorghum, wheat, tomatoes, bananas, chili peppers, oranges, lemons, limes, mangos, other tropical fruits, beans, barley, avocados, blue agave and coffee. The most important crops for national consumption are wheat, beans, corn and sorghum. The most important export crops are sugar, coffee, fruits and vegetables, most of which are exported to the United States.The most important animal feed crop is alfalfa followed by sorghum and corn.

Agricultural production in recent years in Mexico, has been developed under a scenario of opening of the Mexican economy to international competition; deregulation and privatization, these have been the most significant elements of the macro-economic policy in recent years.These elements, including adherence to the Free Trade Agreement with the United States and Canada in 1994, have strongly influenced the evolution of the agricultural sector in Mexico.   Mexico is the home of avocado and corn (or maize), with both having long histories which are deeply engrained in Mexican culture and lifestyle. Agriculture remains the livelihood for an estimated 8 million rural farmers (about 7 per cent of the total population), who produce much of Mexicos agricultural and food produce (agrifoods) for export and domestic markets, on landholdings no larger than five hectares.

Mexico is among the worlds leading agrifood producer: ranked first in avocado, lemon and limes, third and fourth respectively for grapefruit and corn, fifth for beans, coconut oil, oranges and poultry and sixth for sugar. However, owing to various factors, both national and international, including trade and related policy reforms, Mexican agricultural production has suffered.
