By Insulation: Insulated Cables Hold a Strong Position and Continue to Expand

Insulated cables accounted for 89.36% of the market in 2025. This reflects a preference for insulated conductors in nearly all applications, except cost-sensitive overhead distribution. Non-insulated products, mainly bare aluminum conductors, remain relevant for rural grids and long-distance overhead sections. Their role is declining as underground cable use increases and grid modernization replaces older overhead infrastructure. Insulated cables are projected to expand at a 6.70% CAGR from 2026 to 2031.

Higher-specification XLPE-insulated, low-smoke, zero-halogen, and halogen-free fire-resistant cables support this growth. Saudi Energy requires XLPE insulation for underground power cables in accordance with IEC 60502-1. This has made XLPE the standard choice for new underground procurement. Data-center and telecommunications projects also require insulation designed for fire safety and enclosed spaces.
