China Maize Market
China is one of the biggest maize producers and consumers in the Asia-Pacific. Maize production in China has increased by 125% in the last two decades. Maize is the major crop in the place of rice in China. This enormous growth is a result of the rapid growth in meat consumption among the Chinese.
In China, the maize crop is mostly used in animal feed for meat production. China is one of the largest animal feed producers in the world. Around 60% of the total maize production in China is utilized for animal feed production and only 10% is utilized for human food and seeds. Another 30% of the crop is used in sweetener production, alcohol production and other syrups and chemical production.
China accounts for 50% of the total production and consumption of pork meat in the world. The total pig population in China is 700 million, which is mostly fed maize crop. Maize is the major ingredient in animal feed and this is the reason for the huge Chinese appetite for the maize crop.
In 2015, Chinese farmers shifted to the soybean crop because of the high market price and less input insensitive nature of the crop. This resulted in a slow production rate of maize, which witnessed an annual decline from 5.7% to 5.5%. The Chinese maize stock is also in the deficit in production and consumption balance. In such a situation, China will need to import maize heavily in the future to be able to meet the animal feed and meat production requirements. Like other developing countries in the Asia-Pacific, China is also struggling due to low arable land, poor quality of hybrid seeds and lack of awareness among farmers about modern technology for better crop production. The result is lower crop production per acre compared to the developed countries.
By 2021, China is expected to grow as the major maize importing country compared to Rest of the World. However, at present, the Chinese government is promoting the consumption of domestic maize by tightening imports from other countries. China is currently facing a deficit in maize stock and if it wants to grow its feed production continuously in the near future, the country has to improve its import policies.
