Growth in Rail and Road Freight Sectors are Driving the Market

The major importance of Australia’s rail freight industry is one of the major drivers of the freight and logistics market. Its rail network consists of 25 operators which are primarily located in southern states and resource-rich areas. The major rail operators are Aurizon Holding and Asciano, with remaining 22 operators taking up a very small share of the market. The rail network caters predominantly to the movement of bulk non-time-sensitive commodities such as coal and iron ore and therefore has a high export focus. The road freight network carries bulk and non-bulk freight as well as time-sensitive commodities such as fresh food, construction materials, and fuel. Important interstate road freight networks in Australia include the Hume Highway which connects Sydney and Melbourne, the Pacific Highway which connects Sydney and Brisbane, and the Newell Highway which connects Melbourne and Brisbane. In 2015, the national domestic freight amounted to over 725 billion tonne-kilometers, of which rail accounted for half and road one-third. Over 75% of the tonne-kilometers on Australia’s road network and 99.8% on the rail network are accounted for by intrastate freight. Nearly 8% of Australia’s non-bulk rail freight is transported through three main corridors, namely between the eastern states and Perth, between Melbourne and Brisbane, and between Brisbane and northern Queensland. Road freight in Australia specializes in delivering time-sensitive and perishable commodities such as fresh fruit and groceries, consumer goods such as white goods and electronics, and construction material such as steel, concrete, and timber. Road freight directly competes with rail in transporting bulk commodities such as cattle, grain and processed metals over large distances. Huge investments are being made in urban and short-haul rail freight services, with supply chain infrastructure investments in port and intermodal terminals by companies such as Qube Logistics.

The Government of Australia has also committed USD 300 million to ARTC for an inland freight railway project between Melbourne and Brisbane to undertake pre-construction activities such as corridor planning, environmental assessment, community consultation and land acquisition. The inland railway is expected to reduce transit times between the two cities, greatly improve rail connectivity for rural businesses and enable the operation of longer and higher productivity freight trains in the region.

Air freight has been a small part of Australia’s overall freight and logistics market, mainly for moving high-value and time-critical goods such as parcels and seafood. Airports usually have freight offices to handle parcels.

Sea trade, on the other hand, occupy a greater role in the Australian market, with the most important sea freight movements dedicated to the export of bulk ores and minerals, and the import of manufactured goods into state capitals. The massive volumes being exported through Australia’s bulk ports offer great opportunities for growth with potential new port developments in many states. Projects such as the Galilee Basin State Development Area, LNG developments in the Northern Territory, a bulk export port in South Australia is being planned, and the development of Port Hastings in Victoria. There are several large bulk export ports being planned as well in Western Australia, including Oakajee, Anketell Port, and Geraldton. A major volume of the freight is dominated by the Pilbara region and in terms of value, a significant trade comes from the import of manufactured goods such as containerized goods and fuel.
