Long Range Wide Area Network, cellular, and satellite connections serve different field settings. Long Range Wide Area Network suits open land within gateway range and supports low-power devices. Cellular networks suit farms that need higher data throughput or wider service integration. The European Space Agency's GAUFF project assessed combinations of Long Range Wide Area Network, 5G, and Narrowband Internet of Things for remote locations. Cranfield University used Delta-T Devices Ltd PR2 Profile Probes for research into water movement under different tillage regimes. NIAB East Malling used WET150 sensors and GP2 loggers in growroom research. Rothamsted Research released soil monitoring data from 6 North Wyke Farm Platform field catchments spanning to 2024. College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise (CAFRE) reported in July 2025 that it was conducting ongoing soil health monitoring across its Greenmount Campus and Glenwherry farms.
