High consumption of meat and reduced meat prices boost market sales
- By type, the consumption of mutton and beef is high in the country, together accounting for a value share of over 85% in 2022 within the red meat market due to an increase in production and availability of mutton at lower prices (USD 2.9 per kg). Consumption is increasing as red meat has become the most affordable meat, with production rising to 143.44 thousand tonnes in 2022. As of 2021, the livestock production index for Saudi Arabia was 144.3, which is increasing gradually at a rate of 7.1% with government support.
- Among meat types, beef in Saudi Arabia is predicted to register a high-growing CAGR of 3.06% by value during the forecast period (2023-2029). Most Saudi Arabian consumers prefer slow-cooked meat like beef, which offers a premium taste. With the increase in the expat population, beef demand has also increased; almost 1/3 of the population is expat.
- The other meat types segment, especially camel meat, is projected to be the fastest-growing, with a CAGR value of 4.09% during the forecast period (2023-2029). This is due to the increased consumption of camel meat, resulting in increased domestic production, reaching over 108.7 tonnes in 2022.
- Most of the country's edible meats are imported. To reduce the dependency on imports, Saudi Arabia launched a single program, the National Industrial Development and Logistics Program (NIDLP), to boost edible meat during 2020-2025. It aims to reinforce food security by establishing a regional food hub to ensure that local manufacturers meet all food needs. Specialized manufacturing clusters will be established, linking farmers, manufacturers, packaging plants, and retail companies to enable the local food processing industries of edible meat to meet 85% of the local demand for processed food products by 2030.
