Polydopamine-based production and chemical DOPA polymerization can provide defined molecular-weight distributions. These methods can also provide more predictable ultraviolet attenuation profiles than natural extraction. Formulators value that control when they need consistent performance across production batches.

The segment also has a lead in advanced materials research. Molecularly engineered selenomelanin nanoparticles achieved a persistent radical concentration of 1.76 × 10¹⁸ spins g⁻¹ in a 2025 study. Pharmaceuticals Lead Across Current Demand and Forecast Growth

Pharmaceuticals held 44.34% of the melanin market size in 2025 and are projected to advance at a 7.45% CAGR through 2031. This position reflects melanin’s biocompatibility, photothermal conversion efficiency, and metal-chelation capacity. It can support drug delivery, cancer imaging, photothermal therapy, and radioprotection research. A 2026 in vitro study reported 67.8% oxaliplatin loading efficiency for glycol chitosan-modified natural melanin nanoparticles. The result shows how melanin-based carriers can be engineered for controlled drug loading and release.
