  • With the rise of 5G, new applications like high-resolution cloud gaming, industrial IoT process control, and onsite augmented reality guidance for workers that use 5 G's super high speed, low latency, and machine-machine communications are expected to be introduced. With such applications, the 5G rollout will significantly impact many industries, including data center infrastructure and virtualized networking. Network and router upgrades are necessary for data centers to adapt to 5G and more significant updates to existing technologies, such as network functions virtualization (NFV) and software-defined networking (SDN).   • In November 2022, INNIO stated that Winthrop Technologies had chosen its Jenbacher engine technology to power a 60-megawatt-megawatt (MW) hyperscale data center in Dublin, Ireland. INNIO plans to deploy 22 containerized Jenbacher engines that can be converted to run on hydrogen as the fuel becomes more widely available. The Jenbacher engines would produce 60 MW of continuous rated power while fulfilling EU pollution limits.

A facility maintenance program helps ensure power and cooling systems continuously perform as expected throughout the life cycle of the data center. On the other hand, a poorly managed program increases operating costs due to higher failure rates, resulting in costly repairs and extended periods of downtime. Given the sensitive nature of a data center, owners and operators prefer specialty trade laborers to build and operate their facilities with experience within critical environments.
