North America Security Screening Market Analysis
The North American security screening market is expected to register a CAGR of 5.06% over the forecast period 2020-2025. The identifiable situations in which a threat has been responded to tends to create a complicated experience for passengers. Regarding security processes, the need for aviation to be more secure prevails. Additionally, this transformed air transport in recent decades, driving the security screening market.
- According to the World Drug Report by the International Narcotics Control Board (INCB) and UNODC, illegal fentanyl and heroin exports from Mexico to the United States are on the rise. In 2018, USD 180,000 worth of narcotics were seized by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers. Owing to the alarmingly increasing attempts to smuggle banned drugs, the adoption of narcotics scanner is likely to increase in such places.
- However, the equipment and procedures used at airport security checkpoints lagged behind the evolving threats, according to a study performed by the US Government Accountability Office (GAO). The result of the upgrade lapses included bomb-detection equipment which failed to meet current detection requirements.
- Additionally, as development in the whole airport security system or upgrading of such systems takes time to implement, the cost of the upgrade is also a crucial factor. For instance, the project to rebuild Salt Lake City International Airport in May 2019, recorded a significant problem with the Transportation Security Administration, as the agency could not afford the new X-ray screening machines for screening luggage at new security checkpoints.
- The Centres for Disease Control and Prevention in the United States implemented health screening for arrivals at airports in San Francisco, New York, and Los Angeles on January 17, 2020, to detect ill travelers traveling to the United States on either direct or connecting flights from Wuhan, China. This step was taken as a preventive measure in line with the recent outbreak of COVID-19. Travelers on flights from around 26 countries in Europe are also channeled through one of 13 US airports, for enhanced health screening.
- Recently, the Canada Border Services Agency launched a new automated traveler screening program based on facial recognition. The federal government of the country is restricting international flights to certain airports and boosting efforts to screen passengers for COVID-19.
