Monk Fruit has been used for centuries in Eastern medicine as both a cold and digestive aid. Nowadays, extracts from Monk Fruit find their way into tabletop sweeteners, enhancing the flavor of packaged foods and beverages. It can be used to make a variety of products such as tea drinks, juices, candies, ice cream, etc.
Recent studies have shown a growing preference for monk fruit sweeteners over traditional options like stevia. While both stevia and monk fruit are plant-derived, non-nutritive sweeteners, it's noteworthy that whole leaf or crude stevia extracts, despite their long history as a natural sweeteners, have not received FDA approval as safe food additives.
In recent years, new countries have approved the use of monk fruit extracts as sweeteners. Notably, in 2024, food standard agencies across England, Wales, and Scotland declared monk fruit decoctions—naturally sweet and low in calories—not to be novel. This shift in perspective now allows these extracts to be incorporated into food and beverage products available in the UK. Therefore, with increasing usage of monk fruit extracts in the food and beverage industry, the monk fruit market is anticipated to grow in the coming years.
Luo Han Guo Market Trends
Rising use of Luo Han Guo in non-caloric natural sweeteners
Monk fruit sweeteners, known for their zero-calorie content, are used to produce sweetness without the added sugars. While some sweeteners, like aspartame, are classified as low-calorie, others such as monk fruit, stevia, and sucralose, have a no-calorie profile.
These sweeteners are notably potent, with monk fruit being 150-200 times sweeter than sugar due to which only a fraction is needed to match sugar's sweetness. Monk fruit sweeteners can be used in various products, from soft drinks and juices to dairy, desserts, candies, and condiments. Their stability at high temperatures makes them a favored choice in baked goods. China exports substantial amounts of monk fruit-derived sugar substitutes to Southeast Asia, Europe, and North America, with North America emerging as the primary consumer.
Guilin, China's primary monk fruit cultivation hub, has seen exports surge to approximately 1.606 metric tons, marking an impressive rise of over 85% from the prior year. Furthermore, Mintel's 2022 survey revealed that over 60% of US consumers are seeking healthier chocolate options, signaling a rising demand for safe, no-calorie sweeteners like Monk Fruit in the coming years.

Increasing Production of Monk Fruit in China
In China, Guangxi, particularly Yongfu County, along with Xing'an, Rong'an, and Lingui Counties in Guilin, dominate monk fruit cultivation. Yongfu County stands out as the nation's primary monk fruit planting hub, with Longjiang Township in Yongfu being hailed as the fruit's birthplace. As demand surges for monk fruit—driven by its applications in natural sweeteners, traditional Chinese medicine, and the food and beverage sector—production has seen a notable uptick in recent years.
China has been bolstering monk fruit production by establishing various facilities in recent years. In October 2024, Yongfu County unveiled ambitious plans to transform into the world's premier hub for high-quality monk fruit development over the next five years. The county aims to spearhead global branding for the monk fruit industry and serve as a model for revitalizing and integrating rural industries in China's hilly regions.
Earlier, Yongfu County inaugurated the Monk Fruit Science and Technology Demonstration Park Detoxification Center. This center has emerged as the nation's most comprehensive and expansive detoxification seedling breeding base for monk fruit. It boasts the capacity to produce over 30 million premium detoxification seedlings annually. This achievement not only safeguards and nurtures monk fruit germplasm resources but also ensures the robust and sustainable growth of the entire monk fruit industry chain. Thanks to government initiatives and increased income over the past few years, Yongfu County expanded its planting area from 11,500 acres in 2023 to 21,660 acres in 2024, marking a remarkable 100% increase in just one year to cater to surging international market demands.
