Market insight:

The Cameroon seeds market is relatively small when compared to the seeds market of other African nations, like Ghana, Nigeria, and South Africa. Imported seeds have a larger role in commercial seed market in Cameroon. Currently, major global seed players rely on collaboration with Cameroonian seed distributors, as a predominant business strategy. National Institute of Agricultural Research and Development (IRAD) and International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) form two prominent seed producers, especially for maize and rice. Maize and groundnuts seeds are widely available in the Cameroon seeds market. In 2014, the market recorded around 24,000 ton of maize seed and 35,000 ton of groundnut seeds.

The seeds market for cereal crops is expected to witness a moderate growth while the vegetables seed market is expected to witness a healthy growth. During 2012-2014,  the seeds market of dry beans recorded a healthy CAGR of 7.14%.

Market Dynamics:

Although the domestic market in Cameroon has huge requirements for seeds, the limited resources, inadequate research, old farming techniques, and prevalence of local variety of seeds have led to a largely insufficient domestic production. The largely unsatisfied domestic market, ever increasing food consumption, and acceptance for improved hybrid seeds are expected to drive the seeds market in Cameroon and witness a steady growth during the forecast period.

  • Untapped seeds market, with minimal presence of private sector companies
  • Introduction of new projects, policies and regulations, supported by the government and financed by international organizations, is expected to boost the local seeds market.

  • Lack of knowledge transfer activities (training, technical assistance, etc.)
  • Lack of competitive seeds market, due to which farmers have to be content with primitive variety of seeds.

Market Segmentation:

The Cameroon seeds market can be distinguished on the basis of type of crops, such as, cereal crops, legume crops, oilseeds, cash crops, vegetable and fruits. Maize, rice, sorghum, and millets are some of the major cereal crops while dry beans (common beans) and cow pea are the leading legume crops in the Cameroon seeds market. Soybean and groundnut are the leading oilseed crops preferred for sowing purposes. Tomato and onions are the leading vegetables preferred for cultivation in Cameroon. Banana is a major fruit, which is cultivated in Cameroon. Cocoa, coffee, and cotton are the major cash crops, widely cultivated across Cameroon.

Trade Analysis:

Seeds market in Cameroon is largely indigenous; farmers normally use hybrids introduced by IRAD and IITA or else use seeds retained from the harvest of last season’s crops. This factor was the reason behind minimum import of seeds into Cameroon. However, the trends, with respect to the seed consumption, are changing. The ever increasing demand and consumption of cereal crops is driving the Cameroon market to import cereal crop seeds. The state of requirement can be gauged from the fact that around 990 ton of maize seeds were imported by Cameroon in 2016, a staggering 330% increase in import quantity from 2015, when Cameroon imported nearly 230 ton. South Africa is the leading exporter of maize seeds to Cameroon. Apart from cereal crop seeds, the demand for vegetable seeds is also high and, hence, around 53 ton of vegetable seeds were imported in 2016. The local seeds market is not even able to cater its own domestic demands and, thus, Cameroon has negligible export of seeds.

Recent Development:

In March 2017, the 2017 farming season of Cameroon was launched, under which the government offered 5.4 million cassava cuttings, three million banana and plantain suckers, 1,000 ton of maize seeds, 725,000 ton of rice seeds, 500,000 yam seeds, two million mature cocoa seedlings, 2.5 million mature coffee seedlings and 600 ton of Irish potato seedlings.
