India’s soft drink packaging market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 13.6% in terms of sales volume to reach 49 billion units over the forecast period 2017 - 2022.
The soft drinks packaging market in India has seen a remarkable change lately, from the ordinary multi-serve presentations found through all soft drink categories to smaller ‘on the go’ packs, and even larger ‘family packs’. Soft drinks packaging is expected to continue to register strong total volume growth due to the adoption of health and wellness products by consumers. This will lead to an increase in consumption of energy drinks, fruit juices, and bottled water.
The demand for small packaged juices and nectars is growing but freshly prepared products are still dominating the sector in India. The packaging focus for carbonates has shifted from refillable glass bottles to non-refillable PET bottles. The majority of volume and value growth is likely to come from bottled water and juice, which are being embraced by consumers in urban and rural areas alike. Increased marketing efforts and communications from soft drink manufacturers are expected to continue playing an important role in terms of pushing sales figures in most soft drinks categories.
The majority of carbonated soft drinks are sold in aluminum cans and PET bottles. They are also sold in bulk in the food service industry through soda fountains. Only a very small portion of CSDs are still packaged in glass bottles, and these are usually packaged in smaller sizes, due to changing consumer preferences and lifestyles as well as increased costs associated with transporting heavy, low-volume glass containers versus high volume-to-packaging ratio PET bottles and aluminum cans.
India’s soft drink packaging market is segmented on the basis of material (plastic, paper, metal, and glass), soft drink product (juices, bottled water, energy drinks, ready-to-drink (RTD), and carbonates), and products (beverage cans, PET bottles, and boxes).
