Cold chain is one of the emerging markets in the logistics industry, which is expected to grow at a rapid pace during the forecast period. Global losses in the food sector total more than USD 750 billion annually. These losses primarily result from the lack of proper facilities, improper food safety handling procedures, and insufficient training for the personnel working in the cold chain. Hence, there has been a growing demand for the cold chain storage facilities across the world to handle temperature sensitive products safely and efficiently. The total capacity of refrigerated warehouses, worldwide, is 616 million cubic meters in 2018, which represents a growth rate of 2.67%, compared to that of 2016.
The growing trade liberalization and the governmental efforts to reduce food waste are creating demand for cold chain services to store temperature sensitive goods. The World Trade Organization (WTO) and the bilateral free trade agreements, such as the North America Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and the European Union Free Trade Agreement (FTA), have created opportunities for exporters in the United States and Europe for increasing the trade of perishable foods. Additionally, European Union is funding other countries for developing cold storage facilities to assist the agricultural sector. For instance, the European Union has granted funds for the construction of four cold storage facilities for pomegranate farmers in Khulm district in Balkh province, Afghanistan. The lack of standard cold storage facilities has been a huge challenge and a major problem for the farmers across Afghanistan. Most of their agricultural produces were getting wasted while waiting for the cargo carriers. The project aims to provide storage facilities for farmers to keep their goods fresh while waiting to send it on to foreign and domestic markets. The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2018. Developed countries, as well as emerging economies, are stressing on the implementation of regulations and policies that focus on consumer health and safety.
The cold chain pharmaceutical market was valued at USD 13.4 billion in 2017. New therapies, such as gene therapies and regenerative therapies, and the rapid shift toward temperature-managed shipments, are on the spotlight currently. Additionally, many of the most innovative therapeutics, like advanced cell-based therapies and other regenerative medicines, are close to a commercial launch, and the need to be shipped under very exact temperature conditions is created, which shows a huge demand for the cold chain transportation facilities. As per the industry sources, the growth of temperature-controlled products is more than twice the rate of non-temperature-controlled products. Most of the companies are showing interest in handling the growing needs. There have been significant merger and acquisition activities between the LSPs and the medical logistics companies to provide integrated solutions to the clients. For instance, UPS acquired Marken, a global supply chain organization in the life sciences industry. Another example is the acquisition of Unitrans by Quickstat.
