The Europe and Eurasian Crop Protection Chemicals Market was valued at USD 21.62 billion in 2017 and is expected to register a CAGR of 4.7% during the forecast period (2018-2023).Russian federation is one of the is  largest market share holder of crop protection chemicals market in Europe and Eurasian region followed by Poland, Ukraine and others.

Crop protection chemicals constitute a class of agrochemicals used for preventing the destruction of crops by pests, diseases, and weeds. The market is segmented by mode of action herbicides, fungicides, insecticides, molluscicides, nematicides, and others. By application type, it was divided into grains & cereals, pulses & oilseeds, fruits & vegetables, commercial crops, turf & ornamentals. Synthetic and bio based are the sub segments of origin.

One of the Major Consuming Countries – Russian Federation

In 2016, wheat took 53% of the Russian crop protection market value, while other main grain crops like barley and corn had much smaller shares of 11% and 7%, respectively. The planted area under wheat in Russia slightly increased from 25.1 million hectares in the year 2013 to 27.9 million hectares in 2017. The major reason was the growth of exports due to good demand for Russian wheat in the global market. Increasing demand for Russian wheat and subsequent increase in production area of wheat, rice and other grain crops has led to the increase in usage of crop protection solution for grain crops, especially wheat. The main characteristics of Russian crop protection market is not only the presence of global companies, but also strong, powerful domestic players like August, Schekovo, etc.

High Demand for Improving Soil Health

The increase in crop losses and degradation of soil health every year is the major concern for many farmers and forcing them to use crop protection chemicals in order to protect the crops. However, due to the regulatory pressure and growing demand for organic food, bio-based are the most preferred and gaining huge demand for improving soil health. In the year 2017, European Union launched a project called NEMASYS to combat this problem. The aim of the NEMASYS project is to develop a cost-effective soil treatment as an alternative to conventional nematicides based on naturally occurring, non-toxic, essential oil (EO) based formulations delivered by a novel biodegradable time-release system. In order to improve the quality of soil, chemicals need to be used which can help in improving the quality of the soil, without depriving it of the essential nutrients. .While the prevalence of chemical or synthetic chemicals in crop protection would continue, human, animal and environmental health including soil is matter of concern.

Increasing Incidence of Side Effects of Chemicals on Humans and Beneficial Flora & Fauna

All crop protection chemicals used for crops are eventually degraded if they remain in the topsoil where there is greatest microbial activity. Once the crop protection chemicals or their degradation products are flushed through the upper soil layers their persistence may be extended. It is the problem of toxic products in groundwater that has led to the prohibition of crop protection chemicals in some countries. The incidence of pesticide poisoning and mortality serves as a grim warning of the risks that arise when pesticides are widely used under poor management. The liquid formulations of some of the non-fumigants are emulsifiable concentrates. Their use should therefore be restricted to skilled operators who take adequate safety precautions. The application of different types of chemicals to crops too near to harvest is another risk which pesticide residue monitoring may not be sufficiently well coordinated to prevent.
