In the year 2017, European Union launched a project called NEMASYS to combat this problem. The aim of the NEMASYS project is to develop a cost-effective soil treatment as an alternative to conventional nematicides based on naturally occurring, non-toxic, essential oil (EO) based formulations delivered by a novel biodegradable time-release system. In order to improve the quality of soil, chemicals need to be used which can help in improving the quality of the soil, without depriving it of the essential nutrients. .While the prevalence of chemical or synthetic chemicals in crop protection would continue, human, animal and environmental health including soil is matter of concern.
All crop protection chemicals used for crops are eventually degraded if they remain in the topsoil where there is greatest microbial activity. Once the crop protection chemicals or their degradation products are flushed through the upper soil layers their persistence may be extended. It is the problem of toxic products in groundwater that has led to the prohibition of crop protection chemicals in some countries. The incidence of pesticide poisoning and mortality serves as a grim warning of the risks that arise when pesticides are widely used under poor management. The liquid formulations of some of the non-fumigants are emulsifiable concentrates. Their use should therefore be restricted to skilled operators who take adequate safety precautions. The application of different types of chemicals to crops too near to harvest is another risk which pesticide residue monitoring may not be sufficiently well coordinated to prevent.
