Electrolaser is a directed energy weapon being developed by the US army. The technology involves using Laser Induced Plasma Channel (LIPC) to direct high power electricity to the target. LIPC is formed by producing a high density laser that ionizes the air that it is passing through. High amounts of energy cause the ionized air to form a plasma channel in through the laser beam. As the plasma channel has less resistance than the air or gas around, the electricity induced only passes through the LIPC, consequently making it feasible to concentrate it on a single point. Voltage of 106 to 109 could be passed through this channel. Electrolaser could find potential applications in short range weapons for police and army, and once the technology is scaled it can be used in Aircraft and Long range systems. The system could easily immobilize a target vehicle or human. The weapon can be adjusted to be lethal or non-lethal by varying the voltage input. All the features give this technology a huge advantage of current generation arms.

Ionatron of Tucson, Arizona and Xtreme Alternative Defense Systems of Anderson, Indiana are currently working on this technology under a contract from the US army. The technology is still being developed and could be expected to be available for use by 2020. The Huge potential of this tech could drive high investments from weapons manufacturers. Governments of other countries could also be expected to look into development of their own Electrolaser systems driving the market.
