Actuators are used with the movable parts of the aircraft, like in extension and retraction of landing gears, controlling engine speed by adjusting levers and flaps, amongst others. These systems are powered by different sources (electricity, hydraulic, fluid pressure or pneumatic) which convert energy into motion. The adoption of electric actuators is growing at a steady rate due to relatively safe, low maintenance, and simple architecture, compared to hydraulic and pneumatic actuation systems.
Rapid technological advances in electro-hydrostatic actuators, flight control systems, fault-tolerant architecture, power electronics, high-density electric motors, power generation, and conversion systems have led to the development of more-electric aircraft (MEA). Specifically, MEA provides for the use of electric power for all non-propulsive systems which were initially powered by a fusion of different secondary energy sources, such as hydraulic, pneumatic, mechanical, and electricity.
There are two types of actuators, namely, linear actuators and rotary actuators. Linear actuators are used produce linear motion and rotary actuators are used to produce torque or rotary motion. Due to its flexibility and adaptable design, linear actuators are used in multiple industries. The list includes, robotics, automobiles, solar tracker, military automation and personal mobility equipment amongst others. These systems can also be used in Spacecraft systems. For instance, actuators have been used to maneuver Soft Capture System (SCS) ring in NASA Docking system.
