ASEAN fue fundada en 1967 por Indonesia, Malasia, Filipinas, Singapur y Tailandia. Más tarde, Brunei, Camboya, Laos y Myanmar también se agregaron a esta organización económicamente motivada. La inflación se ajustó a solo el 2,8 % en la ASEAN en 2013, lo que representa un tercio de la India y es inferior al promedio mundial. ASEAN ha superado al mundo en crecimiento del PIB, con un crecimiento medio del 5% interanual. Algunos miembros han mostrado un crecimiento ejemplar, como Vietnam que duplicó su PIB per cápita de US$ 1300 en 1995 a US$ 2600 en 2006 en sólo 11 años.

Los países de la ASEAN son muy diferentes entre sí. El PIB per cápita de Singapur es casi 30 veces mayor que el de Laos y más de 50 veces mayor que el de Myanmar y Camboya. Solo Indonesia representa el 40% del PIB entre los países de la ASEAN y también es miembro del G20. Los países de la ASEAN poseen culturas muy amplias y diversas: Indonesia es musulmana en casi un 90 %, mientras que Filipinas es católica romana en más del 80 % y Tailandia es budista en más del 95 %.

La IED en la ASEAN en 2013 siguió aumentando y estuvo a la par con la de China, por primera vez desde 1993. Las entradas de IED superaron los 122 000 millones de USD, lo que elevó el volumen de IED entrante a 1,6 billones de USD. ASEAN atrajo más del 16% de la IED mundial durante el mismo período.

En la actualidad, el 22 % de la población de la ASEAN vive en ciudades y sus áreas urbanas representan más del 52 % del PIB combinado de todos los países de la ASEAN. Se espera que la contribución urbana a la economía combinada alcance el 60 % del PIB combinado para 2020.

Indonesia :

Indonesia es una de las economías más prometedoras y de más rápido crecimiento de Asia. La alta tasa de crecimiento de Indonesia en los últimos años fue impulsada por las altas exportaciones de minerales, que representan el 37,68% de las exportaciones totales en términos de valor. El PIB de Indonesia está creciendo a una tasa moderada del 5 % en 2015. Indonesia fue una vez miembro de la OPEP, pero en enero de 2009 se revocó su membresía. Las importaciones de máquinas han aumentado para el país, alcanzando el 24,67% del total importado en términos de valor.

En 2014, los principales socios comerciales de Indonesia son los países asiáticos. Estos países representaron el 71% de las Importaciones y el 75% de las Exportaciones. China, Japón y Singapur son los principales mercados comerciales de Indonesia. La industria manufacturera y la minería constituyen la columna vertebral de la economía y son la principal fuente de empleo. Malasia:

De ser un importante exportador de materias primas, el país se ha diversificado hacia otros aspectos de la economía. En el año 2014, Malasia experimentó una desaceleración en las inversiones privadas y el gasto público; sin embargo, el aumento de las exportaciones impulsó el crecimiento del PIB al 6% interanual. Filipinas:

Filipinas es la tercera economía más prometedora y de más rápido crecimiento del mundo . La alta tasa de crecimiento de Filipinas en los últimos años fue impulsada por las altas exportaciones de circuitos integrados y computadoras y accesorios, que representan el 38,13% de las exportaciones totales en términos de valor. El PIB de Filipinas está creciendo a una tasa elevada del 6,9 % en 2015. Las importaciones de máquinas han aumentado, alcanzando el 31,97 % de las importaciones totales en términos de valor y los productos minerales tienen una participación del 20,86 % de las importaciones totales.

Tailandia:

El PIB de Tailandia creció a un ritmo lento del 2,3% en 2015. La deflación es un factor importante para el aumento del turismo, así como para la desaceleración de la economía. Las importaciones de Oro y Petróleo Crudo han aumentado en el país alcanzando el 10,1% del total importado en términos de valor y los Productos Metálicos tienen una participación del 14,55% del total importado.

Los principales socios comerciales de Tailandia son China y Japón en 2014, con un 40,36 % en importaciones y un 24,54 % en exportaciones. Asia es el mayor mercado comercial para Tailandia. La fabricación de computadoras y caucho proporciona la columna vertebral de la economía y es la fuente de ingresos más importante del país. Sin embargo, el turismo proporciona el principal sustento a la mayoría de la población del país. Birmania (Birmania):

Myanmar es un país budista que se esfuerza mucho por preservar su etnia y religión. Recientemente, la cámara baja de Myanmar aprobó cuatro (4) proyectos de ley religiosos, pero entró en controversia por desviarse del Derecho de religión, la Convención de las Naciones Unidas sobre la eliminación de todas las formas de discriminación contra la mujer y la Convención de las Naciones Unidas sobre los Derechos del Niño. El PIB de Myanmar tiene un valor de 53 000 millones de USD en 2014, con una tasa de crecimiento del PIB esperada del 6,5 % en 2015, que ocupa el cuarto lugar entre los países de la ASEAN.

Camboya:

El PIB de Camboya es de solo US$ 15 mil millones con un crecimiento del PIB del 7,2%, el segundo más alto entre los países de la ASEAN. Después de lograr la independencia en 1953, Camboya enfrentó severas guerras y la destrucción de su territorio por parte de Vietnam, la dinastía Khmer y los franceses.

Los gobernantes y la población de Camboya siguieron el hinduismo. Más tarde se convirtieron al budismo Mahayana. Actualmente, el 96% de la población sigue el budismo en el país.

Laos:

Laos tiene sus raíces en el antiguo Reino de Laos, que gobernó el país durante más de 300 años. Laos se convirtió en miembro de la ASEAN en 1997 y de la OMC en 2013. Laos tiene el PIB de mayor crecimiento entre los países de la ASEAN con un crecimiento esperado del PIB del 7,6 % en 2015. El PIB actual asciende a 11 000 millones de USD. 

Brunéi:

Brunei es el país con peor desempeño en la ASEAN. Con un PIB de solo US$ 16 mil millones, el PIB de Brunei está disminuyendo a una tasa esperada del 0,2 % interanual. Brunei está en deflación y los precios están cayendo un 0,1%. El presupuesto del gobierno es del 11,4%, lo que significa que están gastando alrededor del 80-90% de sus ingresos. Brunei tiene un alto superávit en cuenta corriente de casi el 43%, que es uno de los más altos del mundo.

Brunei es un gran exportador de petróleo y gas, que representa el 96% de sus exportaciones. La mayor parte se exporta a Japón, Corea del Sur e India.
